Conscious Sedation for Oral Surgery Procedures

IV Conscious Sedation is always done with patient safety as the first priority. As such, the first visit for a new patient is always a consultation so the the Surgeon can review the patient’s medical history, current medications, physical exam, the patient’s desires, and the difficulty of the planned surgical treatment. Once all of the information has been reviewed and discussed, the anesthesia plan can be finalized and the surgical appointment can be made. Sometimes, medical clearance is needed prior to the patient having IV anesthesia so that patients with serious medical problems can be cared for safely.

As a reminder, for adults, a caregiver must be present in the office who can drive the patient home. For kids, a parent or adult able to give consent must be present at all times.

Once the procedure is completed, one of our Registered Nurses monitors the patient in recovery along with the Doctor, and the nurse helps the patient and the caregiver through the discharge process.

Dr. Smail has a N.Y. State Anesthesia Permit, and he has passed every NYSSOMS anesthesia site evaluation. Dr. Smail also serves as an Anesthesia Site Evaluator to inspect other Oral Surgeon’s offices.
